BEFORE... AND AFTER

The Finale...

Sorry to leave everyone hanging... partially it was to keep it a surprise until we could have everyone over... but our crazy summer schedule isn't allowing for that. So, here it is. The new kitchen. We love it and we love cooking in it. Jerry even said recently there's absolutely nothing he would change.

The sink is deep and has one narrow side and one wide side. I can submerge a cookie sheet in the wide side if I need to. It's great.

The stove has a microwave drawer and true convection oven. We love it and we didn't have to pay 'Viking' prices for it, either.

The dish cabinet: This was a custom request that the cabinet come all the way down to the granite. Not only does it LOOK great... but I had some large dishes that I couldn't get in a regular cupboard. They fit in this one and there is room for ALL my dishes in this cabinet which is great because I have a lot of dishes.

Ahh... the Island. This was a labor of love for all of us. We all contributed elements to the design and our contractor's brother built it -- in our garage so we could see it coming together. Then our contractor painted/finished it. Granite on either side and a Boos cutting board in the middle. The cutting board pulls out revealing a well underneath with 3-4 metal prep bowls. Always one at the ready. The front of the island has two small drawers on either side -- knives to the right and spatulas and measuring utensils to the left. The large pull out in the middle holds the trash and recycle bins. Baskets work for bread, crackers, etc. We couldn't live without this now!

The dining area... part of the big room. This is our table fully-extended, which can seat 10 if necessary. In the past we had to ask one person in the corner seat to be willing to get up any time someone wanted to go to the bathroom (from one side) or to the kitchen (from the other)! It was a giant pain. This is much better.

Granite...

Granite backsplash with glass tile w/onyx accents. Everyone agreed this tile was like it was made for this granite.

The part behind the stove... color doesn't show up that well in this light. I need to work on getting better shots. Nice matching at the edges.

the sink portion being carried in... they were able to cut it as one long piece

Greg Demeter building the floor of the island...

The ISLAND...

Construction of the island is complete... The Boos Block cutting board slides back to reveal a stainless steel prep/salad bowl... lift the bowl and below is the trash can.

From the front... inset pieces on each side are for slabs of granite. Cutting board/bowl in center... first shelf on each side will hold wine bottles... baskets on second and bottom shelf (left).

Island from the back... two drawers to hold knives, etc... we don't have hardware yet, but the section under the butcher block pulls out and holds the trash can and a recycle can!

WHAT DO THESE THINGS HAVE IN COMMON?

Some very interesting reclaimed lumber...

A MASSIVE 24" x 18" Boos Block solid Maple cutting board

An in-cabinet, roll-out, Trash can assembly...

Two packs of canvas-lined wicker baskets...

And THREE 13" stainless steel Prep bowls... ?

These are the supplies that will become our custom-designed,
free-standing kitchen island. Building begins Monday... keep
on the lookout for photos.

TAKING IT FOR GRANITE...

Sorry... bad pun!

This morning we visited the granite fabricator to check on the color of a sweet granite remnant to use for something else and while we were there I asked to see our work-in-progress. Wow! they had it all cut and laid out in the shop and it looked GREAT.

I should've thought to take a photo... but I was too overwhelmed!!

The granite's coming on TUESDAY.

Woot!!

NO RAIN, NO RAINBOWS!

It's been three weeks since our last post... and even though there's no photographic evidence there has been activity. There has been PAINTING. Lots and LOTS of painting. And in between the painting was sanding, wiping and vacuuming. OMG... can you spell, er um smell fumes?!!

Finally, at the end of the day Thursday, June 4th, all the painting, wiping, sanding, vacuuming and prep work was completed, but the cabinet doors and shelves were still stacked around the room, not assembled. They wanted the paint to dry really well before putting it all together. On Friday they were planning to be out at other job sites.

And then it RAINED... and both the contractors and the electrician showed up. They assembled the shelves and cabinet doors... put in all the outlets and hooked up the lighting. It looks GREAT!

Shelves and cabinets going up

Outlets going in...

Look how pretty... I took this pic w/o a flash
so it shows the color. It's sort of a creamy off-white...
sort of gardenia white...

This will be the sink area...

it's really looking like a kitchen... now we're just waiting on the granite fabricators...
